Laptops are the only way forward. Are you aware of that? If some of us are against them or don’t think that they help your children for their future career, and then I’ll prove to you that it’ll make your children have a better career for their future. It’s not all to do with your children’s career, but it will also help adults at work, because computers or laptops, same thing, are not that hard to use. I agree that they could sometimes be very annoying when something takes too long to load or other reasons but, they are helpful for any research or for making blogs for the companies people work at, etc... Laptops are not only educational, but they are a necessity. In our time laptops help us in our education, and will help us find job, and then be able to carry it out. Can you imagine shops or schools without laptops? Can you imagine an airport or an office or a bank without a computer? Using laptops at school trains us for our future life.
One of the ways in which laptops help us learn more is researching. As long as we have access to the internet through our laptops, then we can look for information on any and every subject we are studying. In Geography when we were studying Hazards, there were pictures all about hurricanes. They showed drops of water vapour being sucked up high above the tropical sea, and swirling around in the turbulent heart of a hurricane. When we looked at the pictures I really understood how convection works to form hurricanes. The ways in which laptops bring things alive can help us to educate our imagination. History is a subject where interesting research of this type could be done. When slavery was still legal, black people suffered horrendous punishments. The videos that we saw on our laptops showed scenes of the voyage from Africa to America with punishments like: raping women, whipping men, and making men dance on board. Some were thrown overboard and others just sacrificed their lives. They were transported in very cramped, crowded conditions deep in the hold of the ship, chained where they were forced to propel the ship with their feet. Some were sick, some very hungry, and others were dying and desperate. Laptops give the opportunity to have seen and learned about these inhuman practises. I could not have imagined anything like this until I saw everything. Another way in which laptops are educational is in learning new or foreign languages. Anybody, young or old, who wants to learn a foreign language, can look it up in special dictionaries on the internet. Nothing could be easier than going to Google for the translation of a word. Just type the word you want to know e.g. from English to Russian, and it comes up with the word and in some websites it can come up with an audio so you can hear how to pronounce it. There are also many websites where there are voices and sentences to teach conversational Russian, or any other foreign language. Laptops prepare young people for the future. Through using laptops frequently in lessons students learn skills for later life. Some students are able to do presentations, using ‘PowerPoint’, which can be useful for meetings in the business world. Other students can make posters or leaflets using ‘Publisher’; this is a skill which can be applied in the advertising world. Using Photoshop, students can make and edit pictures for graphic artwork in magazines. However there are some drawbacks to the overuse of laptops. For example, they limit the need for using our memory. Do you know any child, who doesn’t use ‘SpellCheck’, instead of learning and remembering how to spell words? Also because information is always available nobody bothers to learn e.g. important dates in History, or chemicals formulas. Some manual skills are also lost because; it is easier to use the keyboard than to write by hand. That makes students lazy about writing in general. Imagine your child being able to do brilliant art work on the laptop but not being able to write at thank you letter to his grand parents by hand. Big contrast there. Generally laptops are very helpful and useful for students. There are some negative effects on laptops, but this can be turned into positive effects. If people started to actually change a bit from typing to writing, that would be a nice way to make everything more positive into what was negative about laptops. So apart from practising student’s or anyone’s writing skills they are also practising their vocabulary because, you can forget how to spell something, for the cause of using ‘SpellCheck’. But if people do the exact thing that should be done, then maybe those negative points might not actually have an effect. So schools should really try and look for computers or laptops for their students to improve their skills on researching, that will really make a difference in their studies, but with the condition of also trying to encourage them to also write by hand.
